Naomi is an author, educator and creativity coach. Her books range from the From Sadie’s Sketchbook series for middle grade readers to activity books such as the award-winning Spilled Ink, a Writer’s Commonplace Book. Recently, Naomi collaborated as a cowriter with Natalie Grant on the Glimmer Girls series.
After over a decade of writing and directing plays for young people, and teaching as a resident artist in classrooms across the country, Naomi developed Writerly Play, a story-based approach to creative development. In classrooms, Writerly Play provides games, improvisational strategies and tools to teach thinking and writing skills. Outside of classrooms, Writerly Play supports people of all ages in the development of their creative thinking skills.
Naomi also founded Society of Young Inklings, an organization that empowers young writers using Writerly Play methods. Society of Young Inklings offers classes, mentorships and publishing programs and provides a community to connect writers young and old. Together, they explore the ways that play adds richness, variety and depth to the writing process.
When Naomi isn’t speaking, acting, teaching or writing, she explores ways to bring creativity into the every day. She’s a half-marathon runner, a guitar player, a sketchnoter, a tap-dancer, an outdoor explorer, and a life-long learner. Naomi has a BA in Theatre Arts from Seattle Pacific University, studied theatre with the Piven Theatre Workshop and ACT, and has an MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults from Hamline University. She is the Regional Advisor for the San Francisco South chapter of SCBWI.
